New navigation get! fully ajaxified goodness, pretty?

disclaimer: I can’t really code, this is as much as I know, please don’t ask me uber nerdcore question ^^;;

After much googling, I stumbled upon Superfish, which is one of those ready-made javascript menu. The official description for this little package is ‘An enhanced Suckerfish-style menu plugin for jQuery. Now jQuery 1.2 ready!‘, while I have absolutely no idea why they called it ‘suckerfish-style menu‘, I do know what jQuery is*. Being a good codelifter that I am, I wasted no time trying to get it worked on my site, while the process should be straight forward, there’s couple of points that you might wanted to keep in mind if you want to use this on your Wordpress site.

1. you should call jQuery and superfish right before , after everything that already there.
2. superfish might conflict with your other ajax thingy, in my case, it conflicted with live search popup, what you can do is using jQuery.noConflict( ) when you call the superfish, like this:

* jQuery is a javascript library that use mainly for those ajax effects, it became hottest thing in nerdland and replaced other libraries like prototype.js.

I finally have time to get around updating the look for this site again. I’ve been wanting to put site navigation on the top of the page for awhile, since it’s the best way to go, (forcing people to go to index page to navigate the site was a very poor decision, I’ve learned). This design is kinda like a bastard child of PocketT theme, with the core code from the old butchered TypoXP, pretty much a Frankenstein of Wordpress themes XD

Still have a bit more to do, need to clean up sidebar, styling comic pages, updating about page, making current page in navigation bar work somehow, and write about the setup of this site (which plugins used, which modifications I did and how, etc…)

This comic I created especially for Kodansha Morning Competition. It’s 23 pages long and took me 2 months (!!), I realized that sounded atrocious in term of speed, but this comic has gone through various transformation, to begin with, it was started as a completely different story and was going to be almost 50 pages long, which I realized, I won’t be able to finish before deadline. Then it turned into this current story, which still have a lot of pages redone/reword over and over. And I was under the pressure to prove myself, my skills, I can’t say that I was happy while working on this, I was downright paranoid, even after finishing it, I felt bad every time I looked at it, and I wanted to hibernate till March 2008.

I long for the day that I can JUST draw comic without this constant needing to prove myself worthy to everyone else. It’s tiring.

My grandmother just passed away this morning, at 4 a.m.

She was very old, and she lost her mind long ago, no longer remember who she was, who everyone was, she couldn’t even remember that she just ate a minute ago. She was pretty much just an empty shell in these last few months.

The death itself was quiet, it was like everything in her body just slowly shutting down, first she can’t eat, can’t keep everything down, then she can’t get up, then she close her eyes for last time and never open them again, and then, like she was just sleeping, she passed away.

I’m not close to my grandmother at all, she used to live 700km away from where I live. When she still had her mind, we visited her once a year, but even then, I wasn’t close to her, since we spoke different languages, My grandmother’s native tongue is actually Khmer, (she was fully Thai, but Thai people in that region use Khmer as spoken language) while I do understand some of that, I can’t speak it, and while she did understand some Thai, it was patchy at best. So I know her as ‘mother of my mother’ and that’s it. When she came to live with us about a year or so ago, she already lost her mind (not that she gone mad, she just didn’t remember anything and everything), and I’m already a recluse.

It’s startling that I didn’t feel like how I think I should feel when I heard that she passed away. It was more of an acceptance, and even a relieve, she was bedridden for so long. I knew my mom was sad and will miss her, but even for her, it wasn’t a tragic event, it was just the way it should be.

Funeral will be held from today on, and the cremation will be held on Saturday evening.

I couldn’t’ have said enough how much this is making my life much easier. Background is a bane of my comic artist life’s existence. Looking at some of my works, you might think that I LURVES drawing background, but the fact is polar opposite. I HATE it, I loath it but I can’t skip it and I can’t stand doing sloppy jobs on it. (that’s why I got incredibly mad when I saw other professional comics with sloppy backgrounds) If I had assistance to draw me a background (amongst everything else) like japanese mangaka, I reckon even I could do 15 pages weekly too.

Enter Google SketchUp, description from Google itself reads:

basically, what you do is, you draw flat square with normal drawing tool, then you use this ‘push/pull’ tool to pull on the surface of that square up to make a cube, and lo and behold, you just creatd a 3D box!

I’ve been working on this comic for awhile, going pretty slow, slower than I’d have liked. I aim to finish this before the end of november, but now, I’m not sure if I could.
